Basic Feather Badminton Racket Review & Comparison (Navy, Black & Green): Championing The Minimalist Nordic Design

If you’re looking for a racket brand that combines quality craftsmanship, sleek minimalist design, and performance-focused engineering, you can look no further than Basic Feather!

This Danish brand, led by the experienced duo of Flemming Quach and Morten Frost (who is a four-time Yonex All England Champion), has quickly built a reputation for producing high-quality, affordable rackets designed for serious players. Their HG is in Copenhagen, Denmark and they design and test all their own rackets there.

Another good thing to note it that they actually also string their rackets for you so you will have the option to select your desired tension before added the racket to your basket. They used tried and tested high quality string.

Today, we’ll take a closer look at three standout rackets in their collection:

I’ll be going through who each racket is for, and also dive into the appearance, specifications, and performance of each one to help you decide which one might be the best fit for your game! Let’s get into it!

Appearance And Materials Of Basic Feather Badminton Rackets

Straight away, you can see that all 3 rackets have a super clean and modern look, in line with the minimalist Nordic aesthetic that Basic Feather champions. All 3 have a slight metallic look to them, with the racket name boldly written along the shaft. The Black model’s name is much more subtle, being written in black on top of the black shaft. If you don’t like overly flashy rackets, these might be a great choice for you!

All three rackets feature a special Japanese Nanoray Graphite material that enables the rackets to be super stable and solid. The use of wave-frame technology in the Green model which is noticeable from the subtle curves on the frame, is said to offer extra stability and durability, especially when under high string tensions.

As you can see there aren’t many huge variations in the specifications of the three rackets. Shaft diameter (7.1mm), shaft length (21.5cm), and frame height (23.5cm) are all consistent across the rackets. For the frame width, Navy and Black are both at 18.3cm whilst the Green is just slightly wider at 18.5cm. A very tiny difference indeed!

Navy and Black also both have 55% recessed frame and a wooden handle length of 16.5cm, whilst the Green differs with 60% and 17cm. A higher recessed frame can help with aerodynamics and maneuverability, making it easier to produce faster swing speeds and therefore power.

The only metric all three rackets were different on was frame thickness - Navy was the thinnest at 10.8mm, following by the Black at 10.9mm, and lastly the Green at 11mm thick.

A thicker frame typically enhances stability and durability, which is one of the reasons the Green racket is noted for its powerful feel and crisp response.

The BF Navy and BF Black rackets also both have a medium-stiff shaft, whilst the BF Green has a more stiff shaft. The Green also has the highest balance point of the three and is the most top-heavy of them, again emphasising it as a power racket.

On paper, the BF Green racket definitely stands out more than the others - with the more vibrant colour, wave-frame technology, and differing measurements and flexibility compared to the Navy and Black rackets.

But how do they all perform?

Playing Feel And Performance Of Basic Feather Badminton Rackets

The BF Navy racket is advertised as being an all-round racket great for fast and short strokes. However, I did find it felt a bit head-heavy and therefore slower compared to the more high-performance rackets like the Yonex Nanoflare 900 Pro.

However, the frame did feel smaller and more compact during fast rallies, so it’s a bit more suited to players who prefer control over sheer speed or power.

For the BF Black racket, even though it is advertised as a head-heavy racket, it definitely felt faster and more solid than the Navy. It was easier to connect with and offered great power, especially during big swings. The handle area was also softer, similar to Victor’s handles which was nice.

Overall, the Black racket provided a great balance between speed and power, making it ideal for attacking players who want to smash and dominate.

The BF Green racket felt the most stable and responsive of the three, thanks to its stiff shaft and head-heavy balance. The power generated from the sweet spot was crisp and precise.

However, due to its head-heavy design, the racket wasn’t as fast as the others. It’s ideal for power-focused players who rely on stability and durability in their shots, but might not be the best choice for those who prioritise speed and quick reflexes.

Final Thoughts

The Basic Feather Navy, Basic Feather Black, and Basic Feather Green badminton rackets each offer something unique for different types of players. The standout feature is the minimalist, Nordic design of the rackets, however the performance does not necessarily match up to other high-end badminton rackets on the market.

Overall, if you’re looking for a clean design and affordable badminton racket, these can be a great option!

  • The BF Navy racket is perfect for players who value control and quick, short strokes.

  • The BF Black racket caters to attacking players who want a balance of speed and power.

  • The BF Green racket is ideal for power players who need stability and durability in their shots.

With their passion for badminton and a focus on high-quality craftsmanship, Basic Feather is a brand that I’m excited to see as it continues to grow and innovate. If you’ve tried these rackets out, let me know what you think in the comments!
